So last Friday, our class watched a French movie called ‘Delicatessen’. From the title itself, you could tell that the movie was based on food or delicacies. Much to my horror, I found the film to be a little disturbing and I shall explain why.
The film was set in an apartment in France during a post-apocalyptic time where lives revolved around food. Food was considered a luxury and even grain was used as a form of currency.
A man named Clapet owns the apartment where the movie was mainly based in. This man is also a butcher and he uses the ground floor of his building for his meat business. The meat he sells come from non other than the humans that he murder! Disturbing? I told you. So, in the film, he would draw people into his shop, slaughter them for their meat and then sell it off to his customers.
He would do this continually with all his workers except when he met his last worker named Luison. Clapet could not get rid of Luison easily because he had a remarkable talent in handling knives. The movie ended with Luison falling for the butcher’s daughter and Clapet unintentionally stabbing himself to death.
The movie also has some funny scenes which makes it quite enjoyable. I do recommend you to watch the movie, however I do not advise you to eat beforehand! ;)
